Europe has recorded 429 locally acquired West Nile virus infections across nine countries, with Italy accounting for 224 cases and Greece 105, according to the latest European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control data through Aug. 13.
Spain's Andalusia region raised its 2026 tally to 43 confirmed cases after five new positives emerged in Seville and Huelva provinces, with 14 patients developing neuroinvasive disease and one death recorded. Twenty-five Andalusian municipalities are now on alert. In Italy, human cases in Oristano province, Sardinia, rose to 16, mostly elderly patients, while Italy's national count reached 226 confirmed infections with seven deaths.
The virus has been detected in 77 regions across the continent, including areas in France, Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Germany and Kosovo.
