Walmart has slashed the price of ground beef by 12 percent and discounted thousands of other items in a summer promotion, a move President Donald Trump said came at his administration's request to mark the United States' 250th anniversary.
Trump, who announced the price cuts on Truth Social on July 6, took credit for pressing major grocery chains including Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons to lower beef prices ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. The discounts arrive as the average cost of a pound of ground beef in the U.S. reached $6.75 in May 2026, up 13 percent from a year earlier.
Walmart's promotion extends beyond meat, covering items such as ribs, cola, pools, grills, and summer clothing. The retailer has run similar discount campaigns in the previous year.
