Vance says keeping oil cheap for Americans is top U.S. goal in Iran war

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has declared that maintaining low fuel prices for American consumers is the primary objective of the Iran war, ranking above preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The remarks, made in a Fox News interview, signal a shift in stated priorities for the conflict that President Donald Trump launched in February, originally justifying it chiefly on nuclear grounds.

Vance accused Iran of failing to honor negotiation commitments and noted that oil prices have declined from their initial wartime peaks, though crude remains 20 to 30 percent above pre-war levels as Tehran keeps the Strait of Hormuz nearly closed to shipping. U.S. gasoline currently averages $4.07 per gallon, up from $3.16 a year ago.

With diplomacy stalled, Washington has pivoted to economic pressure, while Tehran demands a full U.S. military withdrawal and sanctions relief to reopen the strait. U.S. media report the administration also faces rapidly depleting missile and drone inventories.
