The United States is releasing $600 million in frozen funding for the Gavi vaccine alliance, covering contributions for 2025 and 2026, Senator Susan Collins announced on 29 July 2026.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. blocked the payments last year, and the Trump administration halted financing in June 2025 before the State Department resumed negotiations with the alliance. President Donald Trump ordered structural reforms as a condition for renewed support. Gavi has since agreed to replace mercury-containing vaccines with mercury-free alternatives and pledged to reduce its financial ties with the World Health Organization.
The restored funds will not flow to WHO through Gavi, consistent with Trump's directive that began the US withdrawal from WHO on 20 January 2025.
