US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that a major new highway linking Morocco to the disputed Western Sahara will be named the President Donald J. Trump Expressway. The route will run more than 1,000 kilometres from the Moroccan city of Tiznit to Dakhla on the Western Saharan coast, passing through Guelmim and Laâyoune. Trump thanked Morocco's King Mohammed VI for the honour in a post on Truth Social.
The project, budgeted at roughly 9–10 billion dirhams, or about €1 billion, is one of Morocco's largest infrastructure undertakings and will include the country's biggest viaduct. Its southern terminus in Dakhla will connect to the Atlantic Dakhla Port, a separate mega-project scheduled to become operational in 2028.
The highway traverses territory in Western Sahara that Morocco controls but whose status remains internationally disputed.
