US House votes to withdraw troops from Iran conflict as Senate blocks war powers measure

The US House of Representatives approved a non-binding resolution to withdraw American forces from hostilities with Iran in a 214-208 vote, as the conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes on February 28 continues to claim American lives. Four Republicans joined Democrats to pass the measure introduced by Representative Pramila Jayapal, with Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, and Thomas Massie crossing party lines.

Eighteen US troops have been killed since fighting erupted, including four who died in Iranian attacks in Jordan and Iraq after July 17. The ceasefire that had held between Washington and Tehran effectively collapsed more than two weeks ago, with US forces resuming overnight airstrikes.

In the Senate, Democrats failed to advance a companion war powers resolution in a 47-49 vote, leaving President Donald Trump with no legislative constraint on military operations.
