The United States will complete its full military withdrawal from Iraq by September 30, 2026, ending a presence that once numbered around 2,500 troops. US President Donald Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Saidi confirmed the timeline during a meeting in Washington on Tuesday.
The drawdown follows the January handover of Ain al-Assad airbase to Iraqi security forces. Remaining American personnel are currently stationed in Erbil, at a base near Baghdad's airport, and inside the capital's fortified Green Zone.
Parallel to the military exit, the disarmament of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq is expected to be completed by the same September 30 deadline, under the bilateral agreement reached by the two leaders.
