UK passport queues triple at Rome airport as airlines warn of extended waits under EU entry system

· Society GBRITAPRTFRA

British travellers face passport control waits nearly three times longer at Rome's Fiumicino airport, where processing times for UK nationals have risen from 7 to 20 minutes since the EU's Entry Exit System launched, with one tourist reporting a two-hour queue.

Ryanair has warned passengers to prepare for extended delays, while Wizz Air UK advised travellers to arrive three hours before flights. Fiumicino's Chief Aviation Officer Ivan Bassato said aspects of the system need urgent fixes. At Portugal's Faro airport, border police reported technology bugs causing queues sometimes exceeding 30 minutes, though they noted delays typically clear quickly.

The European Commission stated disruption remains limited at most airports and pledged continued support. Meanwhile, the French Interior Ministry praised the system, citing over 110 million recorded border crossings and more than 44,000 entry refusals since its October 2025 launch, with no major congestion at French transport hubs.
