Two motorcycle racers died following a collision at the start of a Superstock 1000/Superbike event in the Alpe Adria International Motorcycle Championship at the Masaryk Circuit in Brno, Czech Republic, on Saturday.
Austrian rider Philipp Steinmayr, 32, and Romanian rider Adrian Rus, 43, were involved in the incident shortly after the race began on July 11. Steinmayr suffered a mechanical failure that left his motorcycle unable to accelerate, and Rus struck him from behind at speed. Steinmayr was pronounced dead at the circuit, while Rus died in hospital after being transported in critical condition.
FIM Europe confirmed the fatalities, and organisers cancelled the remainder of the weekend's programme. Police have opened a negligent homicide inquiry, though the case is expected to be closed given the circumstances.
