Two custodians at the Israeli Hospital of Rome are under investigation for the theft of 80 vials of fentanyl from the facility's pharmacy safe, authorities said.
The disappearance of the powerful opioid occurred between June 11 and June 23, 2026. The probe is coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Giovanni Conzo and carried out by the Carabinieri's investigative unit and its health-protection command.
In response to the theft, the Health Ministry issued a circular calling for tighter controls on hospital pharmacies and dispatched inspectors to the hospital on July 8 to conduct on-site checks. Both suspects work as custodians at the hospital.
