Two people have died in Texas flash flooding after their vehicle was swept away by rising waters, Governor Greg Abbott said, as rescuers pulled more than 230 people to safety across the state's inundated Hill Country.
John Mark Steward, 65, of Kerrville, was found Thursday as a second fatality. Up to 28 inches of rain has fallen over three days in Uvalde County, and the Nueces River is expected to surpass a 30-year record overnight, authorities said. The National Weather Service warned of a "large and deadly flood wave" on the Guadalupe River and life-threatening floods across dozens of West Texas counties through Friday.
Texas has deployed roughly 2,350 emergency personnel and 1,400 pieces of rescue equipment, with at least 87 roads closed after up to 50 centimetres of rain hit parts of the Hill Country in two days. Uvalde and Johnson City remain areas of particular concern.
