Twenty tonnes of Emmental cheese vanish in transit from Germany to France

· Society DEUFRA

A truck carrying 20 tonnes of Emmental cheese has disappeared en route from Bavaria to France, in what police are investigating as a suspected cargo theft. The entire consignment, valued at roughly €80,000, was loaded at a dairy in Bayreuth last Monday but never reached the intended customer in France.

Investigators say a forwarding company had hired a Bulgarian transport firm via an online freight portal to handle the shipment. The truck arrived at the Bayreuth cheese producer to collect the cargo but failed to appear at its destination, and the trail has since gone cold.

German police have opened a criminal investigation into the disappearance. Cargo theft on European motorways has been a persistent concern for the logistics industry, with high-value foodstuffs increasingly targeted by organised networks.
