The Tunisian village of Sidi Bou Said has been officially added to the UNESCO world heritage list, the World Heritage Committee decided unanimously during its 48th session in Busan, South Korea.
The designation brings Tunisia's total number of listed sites to ten, comprising nine cultural properties and one natural site. Covering 76.54 hectares with a buffer zone of 84.44 hectares, the blue-and-white village had been vulnerable this winter following exceptional rainfall unseen for more than 70 years that caused at least five deaths.
The candidacy was launched in February 2024. UNESCO also placed South Sudan's Boma-Badingilo floodplains on both the world heritage and endangered lists, while adding Lebanon's Jabal Amel castles, Tyre and Sebastia to the endangered register, and inscribing Greece's Mount Olympus.
