An artificial intelligence-powered dating app launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has resulted in 265 marriages since its debut, as Japan grapples with a deepening demographic crisis.

Tokyo Enmusubi, which launched in September 2024, had 16,000 registered members drawn from roughly 36,000 applicants as of 30 June 2026. Government data released this month shows 760 couples are in serious relationships through the platform.

The initiative comes as Japan's birth rate continues to fall. The number of babies born to Japanese citizens dropped to a record low of 671,236 in 2025, marking a tenth consecutive annual decline, while the fertility rate fell to 1.14. Meanwhile, deaths reached 1.6 million last year, underscoring the widening gap between births and deaths in the world's oldest population.
