A Texas judge has denied Karmelo Anthony's request for a new trial in the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, upholding a conviction that drew national attention. Judge Michael Chitty issued the ruling on Saturday, rejecting defense arguments that prosecutors had violated an informal agreement to limit the scope of evidence presented at trial.
Anthony was convicted in June of intentionally stabbing Metcalf during a Frisco school district track meet in April 2025 and sentenced to 35 years in prison. A Collin County jury rejected his self-defense claim. During post-trial hearings, it emerged that both teenagers had troubled backgrounds, with previously sealed information revealing allegations of racist behavior by Metcalf and violent fantasies by Anthony.
Defense attorney Russell Wilson said the case will be appealed to the Fifth Court of Appeals. Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said the decision was expected and respected the ruling.
