Taiwan has begun exporting premium mangoes to Europe for the first time, with initial shipments of the Summer Snow variety reaching France and the United Kingdom in 2026. The milestone marks a strategic push by Taipei to cultivate new agricultural export markets as political friction with Beijing disrupts traditional trade channels.
The shipments come after China imposed import bans on Taiwanese fruit, a move President Lai Ching-te has accused Beijing of weaponising. To meet the demands of the new market, farmers in Taitung have had to strictly comply with European Union pesticide residue regulations before sending trial consignments abroad.
Despite the logistical hurdles, demand appears resilient. David Chen, chairman of exporter Natural House Taiwan, said that while prices for the exported mangoes are extremely high, European consumers have so far been willing to pay the premium.
