Taiwan's annual Han Kuang exercises, running Aug. 5–14, will for the first time simulate degraded internet environments and wartime relocation of weapons production lines alongside traditional counter-blockade and anti-landing scenarios. The drills, outlined by the military's joint operations division, include brigade-level mobilisation and naval–coast guard cooperation to safeguard maritime supply routes amid rising tensions over Chinese vessel deployments east of Taiwan since June.
Mobile internet disruption drills will affect roughly 17 million people — 73% of the population — during 30-minute exercises in central and northern Taiwan on Aug. 10 and 13. Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung are exempted due to stock market concerns. Urban resilience exercises with civilian relocation simulacrons are set for Aug. 7 and 13.
Defence Minister Wellington Koo clarified that reports of President Lai Ching-te observing live-fire demonstrations were inaccurate, adding no live-fire events are planned on Taiwan's main island and presidential visits would not disrupt normal training.
