European Parliament President Roberta Metsola promised disciplinary action on Monday after a Swedish lawmaker filed a police complaint accusing a Danish colleague of racist hate speech, deepening a row over far-right rhetoric in the chamber.
Abir Al-Sahlani, a Swedish MEP of Iraqi origin, filed the complaint with Swedish police last week against Kristoffer Storm, a member of the Danmarksdemokraterne party. The dispute stems from a social media post in which Storm wrote that Al-Sahlani "should go home" after she condemned far-right chants of "send them back" during a parliamentary session on deportation policy last month. Finnish MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen also posted a remark directed at Al-Sahlani, but she did not file a complaint against him because Swedish police were uncertain how to handle his post.
Both Storm and Tynkkynen have denied the allegations. Valérie Hayer, head of the Renew Europe group, called on Metsola to take disciplinary measures against both lawmakers.
