Sudan's army has pushed Rapid Support Forces fighters westward and regained control of a 400-kilometre highway linking Khartoum to El-Obeid, two military sources said, after a multi-day advance through North Kordofan state.
In apparent retaliation, RSF drones struck two municipal buildings in El-Obeid early Monday, destroying a lawyers' association headquarters and a bank branch. No casualties were reported. The paramilitary group had spent months massing troops around the city in an effort to encircle it, though the highway remains closed to civilian traffic.
The war between the army and the RSF, former allies whose power struggle erupted in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands. The UN warned earlier this month of a looming catastrophe in El-Obeid.
