Srebrenica on Friday marked the 31st anniversary of Europe's worst massacre since World War II, with the burial of ten newly identified victims at the Potočari memorial cemetery. The remains were recovered from mass graves across the region, bringing the total number interred at the site to 6,782.
The victims buried Friday ranged in age from 20 to 56 at the time of their deaths. More than 1,000 victims remain missing three decades after Bosnian Serb forces overran the UN-declared safe area and killed more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in July 1995. Remains have been recovered from roughly 150 sites, including 77 mass graves.
Bosnia's war crimes court has convicted 61 individuals for genocide and related crimes. Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladić received a life sentence, upheld on appeal in 2021. The United Nations in 2024 designated July 11 as an international day of remembrance for the genocide's victims.
