People's Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has brushed off criticism of his remarks on absenteeism and immigration, telling a youth congress in Valladolid on July 11 that he intends to push forward with contentious policy debates regardless of the political fallout.
Closing the party's New Generations congress, which elected Ignacio Dancausa as its new president, Feijóo promised young Spaniards "a just life" rather than an easy one and pledged to tackle housing access. He revived a proposed national law protecting the "unborn conceived" as a recognized family member, modeled on legislation passed by the Madrid regional assembly in June.
The PP has closed ranks around a strategy of confronting Vox on its own turf. Party spokesperson Cuca Gamarra defended the leader's "brave debates" on absenteeism, nationality, and family policy during an event in Ermua on July 12.
