Spain has made €25 million available to care for unaccompanied minors in Ceuta, where authorities are sheltering roughly 1,100 children against a capacity of just 90, after the mass border crossing that left dozens dead last week. Youth Minister Sira Rego will travel to the enclave on Friday to assess conditions that Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas has called "completely untenable".

Under a 2025 Spanish immigration law, unaccompanied minors from overwhelmed territories must be redistributed to other regions within 15 days. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on August 3 as EU migration chief Magnus Brunner cited involvement by human traffickers and smugglers in the surge.

A Spanish intelligence report concluded Morocco allowed and exploited the situation for political purposes, while far-right Vox leader Santiago Abascal demanded no taxpayer funds go to the migrant minors.
