A software glitch in the German state of Baden-Württemberg has produced incorrect high school leaving certificates for roughly 100 students, who sat their final Abitur exams in 2026 alongside approximately 29,000 peers across the state.
The error, linked to a commercial provider's grading software, surfaced at 54 schools and altered overall grade-point averages in about 70 cases. In nearly every affected instance, the student's final mark dropped by one or two tenths of a point — a margin that can influence university admissions in Germany's competitive placement system.
Authorities are working to issue corrected certificates to affected graduates.
