A Singapore court on Monday postponed the trial of a 19-year-old French student charged with mischief and public nuisance after licking a straw from a juice vending machine and returning it, adjourning proceedings until 30 July to allow prosecutors to consult immigration authorities on whether his student pass would be revoked upon conviction.
Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien allegedly committed the offence on 12 March at the Goldhill Centre shopping mall, then posted a video of the act on Instagram. The operator, IJooz, filed a police report and replaced all 500 straws in the machine, incurring a loss of five Singapore dollars. He was formally charged on 24 April after the footage spread online.
A mischief conviction carries up to two years in prison or a fine, or both. ESSEC Business School, where the student is enrolled, has opened its own investigation into the incident.
