Siim Kallas, a pivotal figure in Estonia's post-Soviet transformation who served as prime minister, foreign minister, finance minister and central bank governor, has died at the age of 77. His daughter, Kaja Kallas, announced the death on social media on Saturday, and the Estonian State Chancellery confirmed the news.
Kallas negotiated Estonia's accession to the European Union and became the country's first EU commissioner in 2004, later serving as vice president responsible for administrative affairs and anti-fraud, and from 2010 as transport commissioner. He ran unsuccessfully for president of Estonia in 2016 before returning to the national parliament as a lawmaker.
Kallas stepped down from politics in 2024, citing health reasons. Earlier in his career, before the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was a member of the Communist Party and worked at the finance ministry of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic.
