President Donald Trump departed a NATO summit in Turkey aboard a newly acquired Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8, a last-minute change reportedly recommended by his security detail amid heightened tensions with Iran.
The U.S. Air Force had modified the aircraft to meet minimum presidential mission standards, including structural reinforcement, anti-missile systems, secure communications, and medical facilities — work funded in part by $934 million redirected from the Pentagon's Sentinel nuclear programme. However, the jet lacks the full redundancy, hardening, and nuclear-blast protection of the existing VC-25A fleet, which also feature advanced electronic countermeasures and aerial refuelling.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said the aircraft carries high-level security protocols, though journalists aboard were instructed to keep window shades drawn throughout the flight.
