Negotiations between Rome's city hall and the owners of the Spin Time building have broken down, leaving more than 400 former occupants without housing after their eviction nine days ago. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said the city received "an irrevocable no" from Investire SGR, the property management firm that owns the former government office building occupied by squatters for 13 years.
The city had proposed renting the building and investing roughly €800,000 in safety upgrades to temporarily rehouse about 120 people, prioritising families with school-age children. Investire SGR rejected the plan, citing legal and safety concerns that would expose the firm to civil and criminal liability, though it confirmed willingness to continue discussions about a potential sale at market value and offered a voluntary financial contribution toward the housing emergency.
Gualtieri said the city will begin moving people into temporary accommodation from Monday, with public housing assignments expected within 60 days for eligible families. A public assembly was scheduled for Friday afternoon outside the building.
