Australian actor and director Rebel Wilson has won a defamation case in Sydney after a judge ruled that an Instagram post she made about actress Charlotte MacInnes was not defamatory. Justice Elizabeth Raper found on Wednesday that MacInnes failed to prove the post caused serious harm to her reputation and ordered MacInnes to pay Wilson's legal costs.
The dispute centred on a September 2023 incident at Bondi Beach involving MacInnes and producer Amanda Ghost. MacInnes, who starred in Wilson's directorial debut The Deb — which closed the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 — alleged that Wilson's post implied she had retracted a sexual harassment complaint. The court ruled that the accusation that MacInnes had changed her account of events was not defamatory.
Wilson expressed gratitude on Instagram following the verdict.
