Qatar Airways launches facial recognition 'Fast Pass' for paperless airport departures

· Technology QAT

Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport have launched Fast Pass, a biometric facial recognition system allowing passengers to navigate departures without physical documents. The service, available to Qatar Airways passengers over 18 on flights originating in Doha, connects more than 700 touch points across check-in, security, lounges and boarding gates.

Travellers can register through the Qatar Airways mobile app or at self-service kiosks within the terminal. Biometric data captured at kiosks is deleted 24 hours after a flight's departure, while information stored via the app remains on the device and is shared only when the feature is enabled.

The rollout reflects broader industry adoption of biometric processing. Half of passengers worldwide had used biometrics at some stage of airport transit, according to the International Air Transport Association's 2025 global passenger survey, and Emirates, along with operators at Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports, have introduced comparable systems.
