Prague Zoo is expecting more than 20,000 visitors this weekend for its "Weekend of Insectivores," an event blending culinary novelty with animal education.
Food stalls at the July 25–26 event will serve fried larvae and roasted grasshoppers, while visitors can also sample garlic crickets, Indian-style mealworms and sweet locusts in batter. The zoo is pairing the tastings with commented feedings of pangolins, aardvarks, anteaters and meerkats. Several insect species, including mealworm beetles, house crickets and migratory locusts, are approved as novel foods on the EU market.
The zoo, which drew nearly 1.5 million visitors last year, also offers invertebrate adoptions — musician František Ringo Čech adopted a harlequin cockroach this year.
