Portugal will deploy 12 new average-speed cameras on its roads and deliver a revised highway code to the government by September, Secretary of State for Civil Protection Rui Rocha announced on 8 July 2026.
The measures come as road fatalities climb: 250 deaths were recorded through 6 July, 33 more than in the same period last year. A multidisciplinary team tasked with overhauling the highway code is expected to submit its conclusions to the interior ministry by autumn.
The National Road Safety Strategy, open for public consultation until 18 July, aims to halve road deaths by 2030 compared with 2019 levels. Authorities also signed an agreement for the 11th Blessing of Helmets pilgrimage at Fátima, scheduled for September.
