The Perseid meteor shower, produced by debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, will reach its peak around Aug. 12–13, offering skywatchers one of the year's most active celestial displays. The shower's active period runs from July 17 to Aug. 24, with the best viewing window opening around 8 p.m. on Aug. 12 and lasting until dawn the following day.
Estimates for the peak rate vary, with some forecasts projecting up to 150 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, while other assessments place the figure at around 70 per hour. In the London area, forecasts indicate clearer skies to the south on the night of Aug. 12.
August also brings notable planetary events. Mercury reaches its greatest western elongation on Aug. 2, while Venus hits its greatest eastern elongation on Aug. 15, shining at a magnitude of -4.5.
