Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a decree scheduling legislative elections for November 28, a vote that would mark the first such ballot in 20 years.
The decree calls on Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip to participate in free and direct elections to choose members of the Palestinian Legislative Council. A long-overdue presidential election is expected to follow in the first quarter of 2027.
The last legislative elections, held in January 2006, were won by Hamas, which secured a majority of 74 of the 132 seats. The upcoming vote could reshape the Palestinian political landscape after two decades without a parliamentary mandate.
