Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made his first-ever post on X on July 24, sharing an open letter signed by 25 companies including Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir urging Washington not to over-regulate open-weight AI models. The letter, titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership," argued that both frontier closed and open models are necessary and drew a parallel to 1980s fears about open-source software. Huang warned against repeating those mistakes, contending that open models strengthen safety, accelerate innovation, and support national sovereignty.
The post drew rapid attention, gathering 45 million views within a day, with Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly endorsing the message. Huang's account surpassed 200,000 followers shortly after creation.
The letter also defended distillation as a legitimate research technique, a position emerging amid accusations by White House adviser Michael Kratsios that Chinese firm Moonshot AI used distillation to copy a U.S. model in developing its Kimi K3 system, released July 16.
