Nigerian security forces have rescued 46 students and staff who were abducted from three schools in southwestern Oyo state on 15 May, bringing an end to an ordeal that lasted roughly two months. President Bola Tinubu announced the operation on Friday, confirming the recovery of hostages ranging in age from two to 16. One teacher was killed shortly after the initial kidnappings.
Authorities blamed Boko Haram jihadists for the mass abduction. During the rescue, several assailants were killed and eight arrested, according to multiple reports. Defence Minister Christopher Musa said the kidnappers had intended to use the hostages as leverage to pressure the government into releasing detained commanders.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated there was no quid pro quo involved in securing the captives' freedom. The hostages had been held for approximately two months before the military operation secured their release.
