The race comes amid fresh scrutiny of Farage's inner circle. George Cottrell, who was routinely presented as Farage's chief of staff despite no official role, reportedly organized logistics, accommodation, and security for the Reform UK leader. Cottrell was convicted of fraud in the United States in 2016 and served a prison sentence in Arizona. He is also linked to flagged financial transactions involving a £1 million donation from his mother. Farage is separately under investigation over an undeclared £5 million gift from billionaire Christopher Harborne.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski criticized "grifters" who call "unnecessary byelections". So far, Count Binface remains Farage's most prominent rival.
