Utah prosecutors presented previously unreleased surveillance video showing the suspect traversing a university rooftop in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as a five-day preliminary hearing opened to determine whether the case proceeds to trial.
Tyler James Robinson, 23, faces aggravated murder charges and a potential death sentence over the 10 September 2025 attack at Utah Valley University. Investigators narrated footage depicting a vehicle believed to belong to Robinson arriving on campus, a man changing clothes and returning with a limp, and a figure running across the Losee Building rooftop after a shot was fired around midday. A rifle was later recovered in a nearby wooded area.
Defense attorneys challenged the evidence, noting that no shell casings were found on the rooftop, another weapon was discovered on campus, and some witnesses described a different suspect. Robinson, who authorities say held "leftist" views and was persuaded to surrender, has not yet entered a plea.
