The supervisory board of Munich Airport has voted by majority to allow the construction of a dedicated deportation terminal at the facility, clearing the way for a project backed by the federal government but opposed by the city's Green party mayor.
Flughafen München GmbH will build the structure and then lease it to the federal government, with the facility reserved exclusively for use by the federal police. Munich Mayor Dominik Krause had publicly announced beforehand that he would vote against the project in his capacity as a board member.
The airport operator is jointly owned by three shareholders: the state of Bavaria holds a 51 percent stake, the Federal Republic of Germany holds 26 percent, and the city of Munich holds the remaining 23 percent, giving the state and federal levels a combined majority over the municipal government.
