Mobile network operators reduced operational emissions by 13 percent between 2019 and 2024 even as data traffic more than quadrupled and connections grew by 10 percent, according to new industry data.
The GSMA's Mobile Net Zero 2026 report, released July 14, analyzed figures from more than 110 operators representing roughly 85 percent of global mobile connections. The findings showed a 5 percent drop in operational emissions in 2024 alone, with operators purchasing or generating approximately 70 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity during the year.
The share of electricity drawn from renewable sources more than doubled over the five-year period, rising from 10 percent in 2019 to 24 percent in 2024.
