Millions of mourners filled the streets of Tehran on Monday for the funeral procession of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, marching from Revolution Square to Azadi Square in a massive show of national grief. Khamenei, killed on 28 February in joint US-Israeli airstrikes, is succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei.
The remains travelled to Qom on Monday evening, where Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli led prayers at the Jamkaran Mosque and thousands gathered to pay respects in the holy city. From Qom, the body is due to be transported to Najaf and Karbala in Iraq before returning to Iran.
Four relatives also perished in the February strikes. The funeral rites will conclude Thursday with burial at the Imam Reza mausoleum in Mashhad.
