The Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael," has surpassed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing musical biographical film in cinema history. The picture earned $629.8 million outside the United States and $371 million domestically, overtaking "Bohemian Rhapsody," which held the previous genre record at $911 million.
"Michael" also surpassed "Oppenheimer" at $975 million to become the most commercially successful film ever made about a real historical figure. It is the first Lionsgate release to reach the billion-dollar milestone.
A sequel has been confirmed and will address allegations of child sexual abuse against the late pop star. Separately, James Safechuck and Wade Robson have secured a new trial date of February 14, 2028 in their civil case against entities linked to Jackson's estate.
