A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the southwestern coast of Mexico near the Guatemalan border on July 17, 2026, prompting a tsunami warning that was lifted roughly three hours later.
The United States Geological Survey initially measured the quake at 7.4 before revising it to 7.3. The tremor hit at 14:48 GMT with an epicentre about 48 kilometres offshore in the Gulf of Tehuantepec at a depth of roughly 15 kilometres, near the town of Puerto Madero in Chiapas state. The quake was felt in Guatemala and El Salvador and was followed by seven aftershocks, the largest measuring 6.4.
Hundreds of workers were evacuated in Villahermosa. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said no damage had been identified in Chiapas or Tabasco, and authorities reported no casualties.
