Umar Dumbuya, an 18-year-old student from London, died after getting into difficulty in the River Wye at Glasbury, Powys, on 30 June 2026 while taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition.

Emergency services including mountain rescue volunteers, firefighters and the National Police Air Service responded to reports that a male had entered the water and could not be located. Dyfed-Powys Police later confirmed Dumbuya's body was recovered and said officers were supporting his friends at a nearby scout hut. A spokeswoman for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award confirmed a young person had drowned during an expedition in Powys.

Leyton Sixth Form College, where Dumbuya was a student, expressed deep sadness and launched a GoFundMe page to help his family with funeral costs. His family described him as a "loving boy" whose death had left a devastating hole in their lives.
