London submits bid to host 2029 World Athletics Championships

London has submitted its final bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, setting up a contest with Rome, Munich and Nairobi, which have also lodged applications for the event.

The bid, led by Athletics Ventures — a consortium of UK Athletics, London Marathon Events and the Great Run Company — proposes London Stadium as the host venue. West Ham United confirmed an agreement to make the stadium available after initially resisting a three-week vacancy during the September competition. Under the deal, the football club would play no more than two consecutive away games in the Premier League during the 2029-30 season.

A feasibility study projected the championships could generate £400 million in economic and social benefit. The UK Government backed the bid in July 2025. World Athletics is scheduled to announce the host city in September following the Ultimate Championships in Budapest.
