Lisbon's river transit network expands on Thursday as Transtejo launches an extended ferry route connecting Trafaria and Porto Brandão to a new stop at Doca de Pedrouços in Algés. The service, operating daily, runs on a six-month trial basis and coincides with the opening of the NOS Alive music festival.
The extension was made possible through cooperation between Transtejo, the Lisbon and Oeiras municipal councils, and the Port of Lisbon Administration. A second refurbished ferry is expected to be ready shortly to serve as a backup vessel on the route.
The rollout comes as Transtejo faces fleet constraints. The Infrastructure and Housing Ministry confirmed in May that a deadline to decommission four conventional vessels was extended to year-end, and Transtejo President Rui Rei has warned the current fleet can only cover all routes if those ships are not scrapped.
