The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy opened Monday with opening statements outlining sharply competing accounts of her mental state when she killed her three young children in January 2023. Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the strangulation deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at the family's Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on Jan. 24, 2023.
Prosecutors allege Clancy acted intentionally and rationally and was not taking prescribed medications leading up to the killings. The defense contends she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. Patrick Clancy, the defendant's ex-husband and the first witness, testified that his wife's mental health had deteriorated in December 2022, with suicidal ideation and weight loss, though he said she had been discharged from McLean Hospital weeks earlier and appeared to be having one of her best days on the day of the deaths.
If convicted, Clancy faces life in prison without parole; an insanity verdict would result in commitment to a mental health facility. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
