The Workplace Relations Commission has awarded €2,000 in compensation to a former Marks & Spencer employee who was dismissed after his staff discount card was used 73 times over a seven-week period, despite the tribunal upholding his unfair dismissal claim.
Mark Brennan's discount credentials were used on 73 occasions between 31 October and 17 December 2024, yet only one transaction during that window was linked to his personal payment card. The misuse cost the retailer €464.39 in shopping discounts.
Brennan was dismissed on 6 February 2025 following an internal disciplinary process. The WRC found the dismissal procedurally unfair under the Unfair Dismissals Act 1977 and ordered €2,000 in compensation.
