Irish court orders RTÉ to hand over covert nursing home footage to regulator

Ireland's High Court has ordered national broadcaster RTÉ to surrender all unedited undercover footage from its nursing home investigation to the country's health regulator, ruling that the material is essential to uncovering potential further wrongdoing.

Ms Justice Emily Egan granted the Norwich Pharmacal order on Tuesday, requiring RTÉ to provide the complete unedited footage to the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). The covert recordings were gathered at Beneavin Manor in Dublin and The Residence in Portlaoise during an investigation that aired in 2025. HIQA had flagged extremely serious concerns including rough treatment, lack of privacy, and falsification of records following the broadcast.

Justice Egan found the disclosure proportionate to facilitating HIQA's regulatory investigation, noting strong public interest in granting access. RTÉ had declined to release the material voluntarily, maintaining a neutral position while indicating that a court order was necessary.
