Instagram has begun suspending users who secretly record people with Meta smart glasses and post the footage to mock or harass them, platform head Adam Mosseri said, with violating accounts facing removal and offending content taken down. Meta has also issued a software update for its Ray-Ban smart glasses, made with EssilorLuxottica, that disables the camera if the recording indicator light is covered or tampered with.
The crackdown extends beyond social media. UK events company Monopoly Events has banned Meta glasses and wearable recording devices from its Comic-Con conventions across Britain after guests said unauthorized recordings made them reluctant to return. Attendees caught using such devices will be ejected and forfeit purchased autographs and photographs.
Privacy concerns around smart glasses have surfaced elsewhere: ferry operator CalMac suspended bridge visits in February 2025 after a passenger filmed without permission using the devices.
