A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a Mexican national in Houston on Tuesday during a targeted immigration enforcement operation, the agency said.

The victim, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, died later at a hospital after the officer opened fire. ICE said Salgado Araujo rammed a law enforcement vehicle and attempted to run over an officer, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. The FBI deployed an evidence response team to investigate a potential assault on a federal officer rather than the shooting itself, while the Department of Homeland Security opened an internal review of the officer's use of force.

The victim's son said his father was seeking day laborers when he was shot. The League of United Latin American Citizens said Salgado Araujo had been pursuing legal residency and called for an independent investigation.
